Mauroa Laird

Mauroa has exhibited at Gifted Sands for 4 years and was one of the assistant curators/salepeople for 2009.

With conceptual object art as her main artform, Mauroa's work is a constant exploration of new ideas inspired by the colours and textures of new material
and experimentation with different tools and burning metals.

Since she moved home to family whenua in Mahia, she has been working with wire to create contemporary kete based on the traditional forms. She has been learning weaving and spinning and aims to acquire skills in traditional Maori weaving.

Mauroa previously worked with blind people and people with intellectual disabilities, so her art forms had to be felt through texture and forms. She started with embossing images and has developed 3D forms of communication from there.

Galleries showing Mauroa's work include:

  • An Eye 4 Art - Manukau, Auckland
  • Hastings Community Art Centre - Hastings Hawkes bay
  • Orca - Napier
  • Pollock Gallery - Awhitu Peninsula, Franklin, Auckland
  • Matakana Co-Op - Omaha, Matakana Peninsula
