Ayson Lewis

Ngati Rakaipaaka, Ngati Ruapani

Ayson acknowledges the influence his family, and in particular his mother Kimihia (a traditional weaver) has had on his development as an artist. As well as stone and wood, he uses feathers, shells, gourd, fibre, paints, ink and metals in his works. Recently he has been exploring the art of ta moko.

His overseas experiences include an Aesthetic Arts programme at the McCullum Arts Institute in Palm Desert, California, and an artist’s residency at Ballance House in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
